I'm really digging your trip report, Nathan! I went to Chiang Mai back in 2010 and absolutely loved it. I'll have to go there again next time I'm in SE Asia. Your photos are making me miss that part of the world!

Awesome trip reports Nathan, I really enjoy reading your posts.
It's great to see other's perspective on places I've been to, and to get a glimpse of other destinations. So many interesting places in Asia.
You guys are brave travelling with an 11 month. We just returned from Vanuatu with a 5 and a 1 year old testing the waters with the kids, with a view to travelling further afield from now on.

I've been trying to get the next part out for a while but this week it just hasn't happened!

We fell in love with Northern Thailand within our first few minutes of arriving in 2008 and have attempted to get back as often as possible since.

Very seriously looking at a Condo/Apartment in the north for retirement (Still at least 3-4 decades off  )

A Condo sounds like a great idea! Certainly cheaper than retiring here in Australia!

Once again, really digging the photos. Makes me want to jet off to SE Asia tomorrow. My next trip is to Japan/South Korea, which I adore equally as much as SE Asia, so that will have to satiate me for a while...

Nathan S wrote:Did you have fun in Vanuatu? I've been eyeing it off recently as somewhere to spend a birthday at soon!

There are a couple of great resorts around Port Vila which are very kid friendly. We based ourselves at one of them (Le Legon) and took day trips from there. Great friendly people, and incredibly safe and crime free place.
It was surprisingly easy to fill up a week there. The VA flights were fantastic, but we did have premium economy which I didn't realise until our boarding passes were for row 1. I booked a reward flight using points and didn't notice the fare class!
You might be thinking about an apartment in northern Thailand, we've been considering a similar thing in Vanuatu. There are some crazy cheap properties there.
Other than property, it isn't a particularly cheap place for things other than locally grown produce. Prices for most things would be comparable to, or marginally cheaper than here.

Nathan S wrote:If you're a Virgin loyalist (Which you're certainly sounding like! :D) EY have always been good for us out of BNE to SIN, we found Singapore really kid friendly and an awesome way to warm up bubba to the region.

Yes indeed, I tend to book most of my work travel with VA and affiliate airlines building points and status benefits for travelling privately. I've also been very impressed with EY for my past couple of work trips to Singapore, and their flight timings work perfectly for me. Haven't been with the family to Singapore yet, but you are right it is a good place to warm up the kids for Asia.
I've enjoying visiting Malaysia before so we're looking at taking our first Asian family trip there early next year, then a trip to the snow in NZ mid year.
