PropJet Daytrip: Mildura to Melbourne

Postby Evan Yananyi » Fri Jan 15, 2016 12:19 am

This report will be in three parts
Intro
I booked this trip to get a ride on the Q400, after they stopped flying in Adelaide, and to get a ride on the Embraer 190, and have my first flight on Virgin Australia since 2008, when they were Virgin Blue, and since their rebranding to Virgin Australia in 2011.

Part One
The route I would take

Mildura Airport
On December 28, 2015, I went to bed at 8:35pm, intending to wake up at 3am with at least 7hrs sleep. I got almost no sleep, so I was tired and sleep-deprived :? but once dad and I arrived at Mildura Airport, I was wide awake. Here is the terminal at night, at 5am, when the terminal was opened for the day.

I went to the check-in line, which was empty. Check-in wasn't even OPEN. So I waited for about 20min before it opened. Once that was done, I was walking through security, and into the café area, where my aircraft was there, after flight QF2086 from Melbourne the night before.

I went and sat at the gate area and waited for boarding.

Great report and photos.

when you said you were at the airport before check in was open for your flight, I did the same for my outback flight from Brisbane.

Part Two
Now it was time for spotting for my 3 hour stay. I walked to Hungry Jacks in the Qantas terminal for a bit of spotting there. I like the spotting there; I just hate how tinted the windows are :x . Anyway, here are some photos.

I then walked over to the Virgin Australia terminal and sat down at gate 10 for the duration of my spotting. Time for more photos.

Part Three
This third and final part will be about my flight back to Mildura.

Date: Tuesday December 29 2015
Airline: Virgin Australia
Flight Number/Route: VA1615 MEL-MQL
Aircraft: Embraer 190
Rego: VH-ZPE
Name: Coogee Beach
Configuration: 6J/92Y
Seats Occupied: 79/98
Flight Time: 44 minutes
Seat (me): 23F
Load Factor: 80.6%
Time departed: 1030 Vic time
Time arrived: 11 Vic time
Runway departed: 27
Runway Arrived: 09
Flightaware: http://flightaware.com/live/flight/VHZP ... /YMML/YMIA

Here is my aircraft after VA256 from Canberra.

Before takeoff, I had the option to move to the back of the plane and have the last four rows to myself, or get a seat in Business Class. I picked the back row option, as I had lots of room to spread out, whereas in Business class, the cabin would have been full. Anyway, here are some shots on the way to the aircraft.

I took my seat, 23F. It had a nice view.

Here is the Economy seat on the E190. Quite comfy.

As we taxied out, we passed by the famous Qantas A380, VH-OQA.

I then saw an aircraft I had been chasing for a while.

We then turned onto runway 27 and took off straight away. Here are videos of the takeoff.

When the aircraft rotates, you feel a force pushing you into your seat. On the E190 (well, at least on this flight), I was REALLY shoved into my seat! I swear I almost passed out! More or less the fun!

We made a right turn, which gave a nice view. I moved to 23A for a bit.

I went up to the emergency exit row to see the view from there.

I caught the sneaky strobe

Light refreshment was served. After this, the flight attendants just came and sat down with me and we had a big chat about Virgin Australia and its fleet. It was a nice discussion :) . We climbed up to 34,000 feet but we only stayed up there for one minute before descent. The Murray River came into view, and I moved to 24F for the landing.

The approach into Mildura is pretty scenic; let the photos prove that.

And that was the end of an amazing spotting trip! Both flights were good, and would love to do this trip all over again.
Next trip for me (at the time of writing) is a trip to Melbourne again, this time from Adelaide, on Tigerair.
