TigerTastic Tiger Trip

Postby Evan Yananyi » Sun Sep 04, 2016 11:31 pm

This report will be in three parts
Intro
This trip took some brave nerves to carry out, judging by past experiences. A friend's flight a few years back was cancelled for four days, and I was told to avoid Tigerair (then called Tiger Airways). But, since they were bought by Virgin Australia and I heard that they were in a similar ownership as that of Qantas and Jetstar, I thought that I might as well give Tigerair a go. On Friday March 11th, I booked flights to Melbourne and back, $39 one way! All up with seats, taxes and after selecting Queue Jump on the flight over, it was $110. Pretty good! I would fly on Thursday, April 28th, 2016, on flight TT448 from Adelaide to Melbourne (seat 26F), have seven hours to plane spot and then fly back on TT471 (seat 3A). It was looking to be a great trip!

P.S. I did a video review on YouTube of flight TT448, and here it is for those interested.

Part One
Here is the route that I would fly.

Adelaide Airport
I woke up at 5am and Dad and I got to the airport by 7am, only to find that the desks Tigerair would use were not open :? so all I could do was watch passengers board Qantaslink flight QF2071 to Whyalla, operated by Q300 VH-SBW.

Once I finally checked in (I was the first to check in) I went straight to gate 20, as when I went through security, I saw Qantas flight QF671 from Melbourne land, operated by Retro Roo I (VH-XZP) , and she would dock at gate 21. Here she is arriving.

It is an amazing sight when your favourite plane parks right infront of you :D . I then looked down to the end of the terminal and saw the Jetstar Jaffa Jet (VH-VGF) park and get towed over to Gate 26  .

Bad weather was about to hit us. Typical Adelaide, right when I have to fly somewhere  .

Tigerair Boeing 737-800 VH-VOR was towed over to the layover bays by the tower.

At the Rex end, I saw the Green Budgie (VH-ZXS), the Shark (VH-EKX) and the American Rex (VH-ZXF) and I got all three in one shot :D .

Retro Roo took off for Darwin as QF754

My Tiger arrived about half an hour late  , and it was VH-VNF.

Very soon I said goodbye to Dad and I went onboard, to be met by an interesting episode  !

Flight Time: 57 minutes
Seat (me): 26F

Apparently, when I boarded, the flight attendants were still cleaning the aircraft. They looked puzzled when they noticed me at the back of the plane. They asked why I was there, and so I explained that before I boarded, the Tigerair gate staff even said to the crew that boarding was starting  . Anyway, I settled into my seat, and the view was pretty good :) .

We left the gate nearly an hour late  and I got a nice view down the ramp.

I saw the Jaffa after she had stopped her pushback. She was going to Sydney as JQ765, also about a half hour late  . A few delayed flights today!

Very soon we climbed through the clouds and ascended to 37,000 feet.

I love the look of the yellow inside the winglet :) .

To be honest it was a pretty boring flight view wise, because until we were at about 14,000 feet on descent, this was the view  .
ImageVH-VNF - Cruise by Ev Brown, on Flickr
The flight attendants came around with food and inflight shopping (if anyone from Tigerair is reading this, this is a good idea for domestic flights  ). I did not purchase any food but I bought a 1:200 scale Tigerair Airbus A320 ($16) and a Tigerair pen ($2.50). Pretty good pricing  . Too soon we had commenced our descent :( and at least the ground FINALLY came into view  :) .

I was hoping for a Runway 34 arrival and that actually happened  ! The views on the approach were pretty good, and here is a favourite.

The Runway 34 approach is pretty scenic, as seen below.

We taxied to gate F14 at the new Terminal 4. Whilst taxiing, I saw an aircraft I had been chasing for quite a while, and I finally got it  !

We docked next to VH-XFH, and it looked HUGE from down in our little A320!

Part 2
Here was one thing I had been chasing down for a while. People may think that this is weird, but Adelaide never sees this aircraft up close :( . Virgin Australia Airbus A330-200 VH-XFH.

Terminal 4 is a brand new concourse, only opening in November 2015. Here is a photo of the very modern-looking food court. It looks good.

Once we exited the terminal, my mate and I went up the Terminal 4 carpark.

I saw the Scoot Boeing 787-8 (9V-OFB) takeoff for Singapore, which was one thing I wanted to see  .

I spied the Naked Rex Saab 340A VH-EKD.

By then it began to rain, and we went into the Virgin Australia Terminal, where we sat at the very end of the terminal. On the walk down I saw the only Tigerair A320 in the old colours, VH-VNJ :P .

On the walk out, I snapped Etihad 777-300ER A6-ETL at the gate, through all the raindrops (pardon these, typical Melbourne weather  )

We then walked to the Qantas terminal. On the way, I pulled into a window and snapped this view.

Then my mate had to go, and I went through security, as I had another mate coming down from Sydney. Since I had a few minutes to wait for his arrival, I spotted at the food court. Here are some pics.

I then went around to my mate's gate. Here is Qantas A330-200 VH-EBE taxiing in after flight QF762 from Perth.

My mate then arrived from Sydney as QF431.

By then we had to go and check in for the flights back home. My mate was going home to Sydney and me back to Adelaide!
