DPS Airport Spotting/Hotel

Postby Ben C » Tue Mar 17, 2015 8:22 pm

Hi,

I am currently thinking of going to DPS for 3 or so days as AirAsia have a sale, The main purpose would be to do some spotting, Mainly for regs not photos.

Can anyone recommend a hotel that you can possibly see the airport or aircraft coming in to land (or just after takeoff)?

As I have never been to Bali (or Indonesia) is there anything to see/do near the airport?

Thanks for any advice.

I have never been to Bali before but did some research

http://www.jetspotter.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=13626

There are lots of small hotels/inns around the area except there are too many to choose from. Aston Kuta Hotel & Residence is fairly close to the airport and is several stories high so you many get a view over other buildings except the terminal could also block your view. There is also a viewing deck at the airport which is open to the public. As for things to do in Bali I have no idea, I don't know what you would want to do in terms of tours, regions, interests etc. Hope this helps.

Hi Paul,

Yes I am, I ended up booking at the Eden Hotel Kuta, which is a bit further from the airport than the Aston Kuta, I should still be able to walk to the airport along the beach but not sure how long it will take.

I am going for 4 nights and flying with Jetstar as I used their Price Beat and got return flights for $140.40.

Hi Ben, Sounds good. Great deal on the flights. It takes me approx. 40 min to walk from the Hard Rock in Kuta so you seem to be closer that that. I have put some photos of my last 2 trip last September and May on my flikr account so you can have a look and get an idea of what to see and how close you can get. (See link below) Im heading over again next month and will be heading back to the beach there for a day or 2.

I use flight stats website to give me an idea of what is coming and going so I can work out the best time to go.
I tried to find the observation deck at the terminal but had no luck finding it. It is sign posted but I couldn't find it. ( might have had to many bintangs )

When you walk along the beach path there is a large break wall with a fence on it. You can walk around or thru the fence and keep going along the beach to another rock wall, There is fine to stay, but I found if you continue much further you will get the attention of security. This has you right at the back of the domestic apron.

At the first break wall there is also some little cafe's which sell cold drinks as they have boats taking surfers out to the breaks. So its quite handy.

I hope this helps, Don't forget you need to have 6 months left on your passport to get into indo and I think the visa to get in is now $35USD.

If you need anything else or have any questions just send me a PM and I will help out where I can,

Have fun

Hi James, this visa is still payable upon arrival. It was to be axed as it has been done for several other countries how ever Australia will not reciprocate for Indonesian passport holders, so it is still payable upon arrival, along with 200,00IDR to depart. Your Australian dep tax is included in the fare but im pretty sure you will find the visa is not.

Hi Ben, if you have binoculars you will not have a problem logging the numbers, or just use your camera if you are taking photos as you can easily delete the image,

I am going to try and find the surf shop this time at the other end of the runway, if you get there before me let me know what its like. Also if you go back for longer Bali is a great place to get cheap flights. You can always do a day return to Jakarta or even Singapore. KLM always have cheap fares from DPS to SIN if you want a ride on a 777. Air asia, lion air etc have really cheap tickets. $60 will get you a return ticket to Lombok on board an ATR72 for a day.

Have fun

Hi Paul,

I sat on the break wall with the fence for an hour or so today, I couldn't remember if you said that is where to stop or keep going as I had no internet when I decided to walk to it, For watching the planes take off it was very relaxing with the waves, so much nicer than sitting at MEL.

I haven't looked for the observation deck, I leave tomorrow so if I have time before my flight I will try and have a look for you.

Glad you are having a good time, I have found you can keep going to the next smaller rock wall but any further than that you tend to attract attention. Enjoy

Hi Paul,

I liked it so much I have just booked flights to go back for 10 nights, I am thinking of flying to Lombok for the day or a few nights, Have you been there? if so, can you recommend any good areas to stay? I'm thinking of maybe Gili Air but am undecided.

That's hilarious Bali has that effect, you either love it or hate it. I always plan on doing a day trips but never seem to get around to it while im there. Its just to hard to leave the beach and sunsets especially when its approaching winter here. Im heading over next week with the family and have all this things on a wish list but im sure half of it wont happen. 10 nights of doing nothing really suits me right now. So I cant really help you on t where to stay at Lombok. Depending on how much spotting you want to do Jakarta and even Singapore are not to far away. KLM has great deals to SIN from Bali

Did you find the observation deck???

I didn't see the observation deck, I actually completely forgot about it

Have you done a day trip to Jakarta? if there was 7 hours between arrival and departure can you stay in the airport?

I agree I have all these plans but I feel like they won't materialise.
