After 3 years with my Canon EOS 1000D and 18-55mm and 75-300mm lenses, I thought it was time to upgrade. I know have...

Canon EOS 7D :D
Canon EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS
Canon EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS

Would love to add a Canon 100-400mm to my kit :D

Hello Brandon
Having the 7D will help with speed and a slightly physical larger sensor. It is not so much the camera quality but the quality of glass.
What image goes through the glass onto your sensor will be quality of your photo. In other words, having generic glass means generic photos.
Maybe would have better buying the 100-400 L IS and using the 1000D. Not the same size sensor and speed but quality would have been better with the 1000D with L glass attached.
Look forward to seeing photos

Brandon - I too am looking into purchasing new SLR equipment as our Canon 400D is about 8 years old. While I take plenty of plane photos, my wife is very much into photography and she is currently looking at the Canon 7D + with 18-55mm + 55-250mm and also the Sigma 150-500mm lens. She would rather go Canon on the big lens but budget will be the issue.

I will be very interested to see your thoughts on the Canon 7D.

I have been having a play around with it today, sussing out all the settings and what not. So far I am very pleased with it. I will try to get out to Brissy Airport sometime next week and try it out and I will share some photos. Will also give it a good workout when I head off to New Zealand next month :D

Cheers,
Brandon

Sounds good but personally I would've bought the 18-200mm lens. Saves space and having to change lenses around all the time. Plus imagine how you'd feel if there was something you wanted a photo of and only had a few seconds to get it, and had the wrong lens on.

I bought a 7D in mid May & have been using it with a 17-40mm L and 70-300mm L. I've just returned from a 3 week aviation jaunt to South America & I will be editing the RAW images in the next month or so. It seems a very good camera for aviation photography & the 70-300mm L is brilliant, equating to a 112-480mm lens on the 7D. IMHO, the 18-200mm lens is too large a zoom range to perform optically well throughout (& there are plenty of independent reviews on line worth a read about any lenses that you are considering) & it's expensive to boot. There have been rumors of a 7D replacement in the near future, so there are some good deals on the body right now.

Just picked up the EF-S 17-55mm F/2.8 for use on my current trip. Not great for aviation but amazing otherwise! Pin sharp throughout the zoom range, quick to focus and fast at night!

Goes well with the 10-22mm and Sigmalux 50mm, just need the L 70-200mm F/2.8 now!

I got a Fujifilm Finepix S9800 and I'm looking to upgrade to a Cannon 600D or a 1100D.

This Is My Gear - Tom M-S

Postby Tom M-S » Tue May 21, 2013 6:28 pm

Canon 550D (with grip, why? To balance the weight of a heavy lens + two batteries).
Canon 50 1.8, possible one of my favorite lenses from Canon. Its really the nifty fifty, great for getting detail and in low light.
Canon 24-105 f/4 L IS USM, an amazing walk around lens! Great zoom range for most things + constant f4.
Sigma 10-20 4.5-5.6 (great for getting those wide cockpit shots, getting everything in the frame).
Sigma 120-400 4.5-5.6, my main plane spotting lens, its such a amazing lens, the OS (Optical Stabilization) works like a dream, as this is a heavy lens, it produces tact sharp photos at 5.6, and defiantly f8!
I pack all my gear into a Lowepro Flipside 400 AW, great bag very comfy for me (All of my gear weighs around 7ish kgs) so its great. I am thinking of purchasing a wheelie bag (possible a pelican bag. Not sure yet)
And of course all the little bits and bobs...

Happy Spotting :)

I'm an nikon shooter, currently going over to the other side.

My gear for the time being until I get them replaced are:

-Nikon D4
-AF-S 80-400VR (the improved version). This is the best plane spotting lens I have and will be the only Nikon lens I'm keeping.
-70-200VR II
-tamron 17-35 wideangle
-300 f4 prime.
