New PC time again

Postby Nathan Long » Thu Oct 22, 2009 5:40 pm

Once again, it has become apparent that I need to upgrade my PC. I'm not that current on PC components and the like, but I have done some research on the net and have come up with the following system. I would appreciate any comments/corrections.

CPU - AMD Phenom II 955 BE
MB - Gigabyte MA790FXT-UD5P
Memory - Kingston 4GB Kit (2x2GB), PC-10600 (1333MHz) DDR3, ValueRAM, CL9, 9-9-9-15, 1.5v, Dual Channel Kit
Video - 2x Asus Radeon HD4890
Sound - Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio Card OEM
Case - Cooler Master HAF 932, Black/Silver, mATX/ATX/eATX , No PSU, 2 x USB2.0, 1x IEEE 1394, 1x eSATA

I would appreciate any recommendations for a PSU and aftermarket CPU cooler.

Thanks.

Nathan.

Stock CPU coolers are very good these days, most have copper cores etc. and good fans.

Are you after an aftermarket cooler - 'just because' - or are you planning to overclock? :?:

I'm only really concerned with the noise levels. The stock cooler fan on my current PC was extremely loud at full speed, which is why I replaced it.

Nathan,

Go a 600W power supply at minimum and always best to go the Power supply same as the case manufacturer. the case you have chosen looks well roomy that you won't strike trouble when it comes to fitting your graphics cards and motherboard in.

Cheers

600w or more yes.

In regards to your video card, I personally have had issues with ASUS hardware in the past. I stick with nVidia chipset and XFX cards where money allows.

I have an XFX nVidia GeForce 9800GTX (around 12months old now, but is still a nice card). nVidia drivers are easy to find, and over the years I've just found their stuff goes harder for longer. Just my thoughts.

Any reason for the additional Sound card? The Mobo has great sound built on! Even Optical!

Everything that I've read online says that 2 ATI cards in Crossfire mode perform better than 2 equivalent nVidia cards in SLI. I've have great experience with ASUS hardware in the past, but there is no reason I couldn't go with the Gigabyte versions. It might even be better to have the same brand video cards and MB. With the sound card, I've always had good experiences with Sound Blaster cards and not so good with on board sound.

Onboard Sound has come along long way! I wouldn't bother with the extra sound card personally and definitely if you can buy same brand mobo as video card. Do it! When they do testing they benchmark on their own equipment.
